My Quest To Make the Wii Fit Stop Calling Me Fat!I'm a long time runner and avid exerciser. However, I struggle between my need for exercise, and my love for shoving crap into my pie hole. During the second half of 2009 and all of 2010, my pie hole was a busy place and I steadily gained weight.
In December of 2010, I looked at myself in the mirror and didn't like what I saw. I mean, the male human body isn't all that attractive anyway and is best suited in a utility capacity. Unlike the female form which is curvy, pretty, and built for aesthetics. But I digress. The fact was, where I wanted to see granite, I saw marshmallow. Or at the very least something that resembled a condom filled with walnuts. I came to the conclusion that I needed to change I have a family history of diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and prostate cancer. In three years I'll be credit card debt free, and I want to be around as long as possible to enjoy it. While genetics certainly plays into all of these predispositions, taking the best care of myself possible will give me the best chance to live the longest, healthiest life I can. I started 2011 weighing 216 pounds - the heaviest I've ever been. For a 5'11" male, the magic weight to have a "healthy" BMI of 25 is 178. I use the Wii Fit to weigh in once a week where that annoying computer voice says, "That's overweight," each and every time. I hate that voice. I've made it a goal in life to lose enough weight so that the Wii Fit can no longer call me fat. My weekly weigh in results are posted in the weight tracker to the right. I WILL achieve my weight goal by 12/31/2011. What's my "Program?"The most effective way to lose weight is through a combined program of a healthy diet (ie, don't shove crap in my pie hole), and consistent exercise. Diet: I don't follow a diet program, and I don't count calories. A few years ago my wife and I were enrolled in Weight Watchers which really engrained into me what a "normal" portion size should be. Using those portion sizes, consuming plenty of fruits and vegetables (5-7 servings a day), and by drinking lots of water, I believe I maintain a healthy diet. Exercise: My goal is to workout every day of the week. When I miss a day, I get cranky. Really cranky. My exercise schedule is included below, although sometimes I have to switch days due to time commitments in other areas of my life: Monday: 4-5 miles running , Upper body strength training Tuesday: Spinning, lower body strength training Wednesday: Mid length run, currently 6 miles and core Thursday: Spinning, upper body strength training Friday: 4-5 mile run, upper body strength training Saturday: Long run - currently 8 miles Sunday: 4-5 mile run and core Given the above, a weekly summary would include: 26-29 miles running 2 Spinning classes 2 Upper body strength workouts 2 Lower body strength workouts 2 Core workouts Supplement: I workout HARD.
