My son's "new" desk
When my wife and I got married, we purchased one of those $50 “assemble it yourself” dressers made of particle board from Target. It was our lone piece of bedroom furniture for a few years before we had saved up enough to buy a nice bedroom set. When our son was born, it became his dresser, and has been ever since.

We've been meaning to furnish his room with some nicer stuff for a few years, but we just hadn't found the right opportunity.

Buying new? Too expensive
Classifieds? Nope.
Craigs List? No Luck.

Then the answer came to us: Old people.

Bedroom furniture:

Our retired neighbors have slowly been purging their now grown kids' childhood things from their home. They finally convinced themselves to sell the chest of drawers and desk that had belonged to one of their sons.

These items are made of 100% solid wood. Not the particle board stuff that I could karate chop in half, I mean the “break my back as I carried them across the street” type.

We picked up both pieces for a whopping $55.

Xbox did NOT come from old people
Television:

Notice in the picture that on top of the chest of drawers is a pretty nice looking television. I'm not a huge advocate of TVs in a child's room, but this was a deal that we just couldn't pass up.

My dad is also old and retired. He still tools around keeping himself busy doing some odd jobs such as being the maintenance guy for a funeral home. The owner of the funeral home was upgrading his TVs for no apparent reason and asked my father if he wanted one of the existing TVs.

My dad had no use for it, but thought of my son, and happily took it. He called me up and asked if Tristan would like it.

For Free!

Rescued artificial tree
Other Furnishings

One garbage day, my wife was looking out the window and noticed an artificial potted tree sitting next to the garbage can belonging to the same neighbor we purchased the bedroom furniture from. On my way down to the bus stop, I asked my neighbor if he was really throwing it away. He told me to take it if I wanted it.

It's now sitting in my great room.

Obviously I'm just trying to be entertaining by suggesting that old people are the solution to finding every and all things cheap for your home. The point is, there are a lot of great deals to be had out there. Sometimes you find them on Craig's List, sometimes you they land in your lap. Sometimes they're sitting next to your neighbor's garbage can.

And it's just a coincidence that he just happens to be old.

If you just let people know that you are open to taking things you will be overwhelmed with stuff.

I lived without a couch for like 6 months and then I mentioned at work that I wanted a free one and I had three within weeks.

My grandparents--who are old--furnished my entire apartment, including dishes and silverware, when I was in grad school. And the TV in my bedroom? Is a 1984 relic salvaged from their apartment when they moved to Florida. 13 years ago.

Old people, and their stuff, rock!

That's very true, Ashley. While not free, that's actually how we got the desk and dresser. We happened to mention while we were all talking in our cul-de-sac a few weeks ago that we were looking to get a desk for Tristan. Our neighbors actually had someone interested in the desk via newspaper ad when they called us up and told us that we could come look at it, and if we liked it we could have first choice at buying it!

You make me laugh, Jana! When we went over to carry the stuff home, they mentioned they just painted their basement and asked if we wanted to see it. I'd be lying if I wasn't looking around to see what they might be getting rid of next. :)
